Amsterdam’s Stadsschouwburg is the title of a theater building in the Leidseplein in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The structure, in the neo-Renaissance style, dates back to 1894 and is the longtime site of the National Ballet and Opera.
The first ‘rederijkers’ arrived in Amsterdam towards the end of the 15th century. During the 16th century, these so-called precursors to contemporary theater formed themselves into ‘rederijkerskamer,’ which can be linked to theatre corporations. Around the period, there were no established theater facilities in Amsterdam, so the shipping firm conducted cherries on makeshift platforms, from carts (during processions) or in public spaces.
The Rederijkerskamers performed in Amsterdam were: “In Liefde Bloeiende” and “Not Bit Lavendel.” The latter was also regarded as the “Brabantsche Kamer” since its leaders come primarily from Brabant and the Flemish regions.
